Ponder

over all the things for which you have cried so far. You will find that

you have craved only for paltry things, for momentary distinctions, for

fleeting fame. Instead, you should cry only for God, for your own

cleansing and consummation. You should weep, for the six cobras that

have sheltered themselves in your mind, poisoning it with their venom:

Lust, anger, greed, attachment, pride and malice. Quieten them as the

snake charmer does with his swaying flute. The music ...

In

the heart of man, God resides along with the individual self, just as

light and shade co-exist. Shade is caused by Light; it declares the

presence of Light. They are fundamentally inseparable. So too, are the

Jivi (individual self) and the Brahman (Universal Self) related to each

other as One Inseparable Entity. The Jivi as the shadow exists in and

through Brahman and partakes of the same Divine splendour. Every

individual has to become aware of this identity. When the One ...

All cravings and impulses rise up with overpowering strength like waves from the sea, roar in fury, and then subside in to calm waters. They do not confer peace. Wisdom lies in forgetting these waves and directing one's attention to the calm depths within. You can attain Shanti (peace) only if you dive in to the deep and undisturbed depths of the sea within, not by swimming around on the surface. - BABA 12 April 2009

To earn Shanti (peace), its inveterate foe, anger, must be laid low. Anger enslaves man and befogs his understanding. When you are full of Bhakti (devotion), understanding becomes easy. The form of Bhakti known as Shanta Bhakti is the best path leading to eternal, everlasting Ananda (bliss). Live a life of high ideals; be always happy and contented. - BABA 8 April 2009

To win perfect happiness, one has to follow the path of Bhakti (devotion), dedicating oneself fully to the Lord. It cannot be got by any other means. The path of Jnana (wisdom) is possible for only one in a million. Under present conditions, Jnana-marga (path of wisdom) is indeed very difficult. The Karma-marga (path of action) and Yoga-marga (path of mind control) are also full of obstacles. Therefore, Bhakti-marga (path of devotion) is the smoothest, the most conducive to success and yields ...

Ravana was in no way inferior to Rama in terms of knowledge but sage Valmiki, the composer of Ramayana, described Ravana as a fool and extolled Rama as one of wisdom. The reason was that Rama put His knowledge into practice and led an exemplary life. On the other hand, Ravana did not practice the knowledge he acquired, became a slave to his senses and thus ruined himself, his kingdom, and his entire clan. Education is meant not to satisfy the senses but to make one transcend the senses and ...

If everything is dedicated to the Lord, there will be no room for worry or sorrow, or even of joy. If you rid yourself thus of attachment, your Shanti (peace) can never be disturbed.
There is a creator behind this enchanting cosmos. He is Omniscient, Omnipotent and Omnipresent. He is worshiped as God using many names and in many forms by various people. Unity, brotherhood and devotion are essential for every human being. To promote these sacred qualities in mankind, some great souls sought to establish different religions. Religion is not a restrictive concept. Religion is intended to develop the human personality and indicate the basic guidelines for right living. Religion ...

Good Sankalpas (thought impulses) can elicit the best out of man and help him to use all his mental strength for his uplift. Ships at sea are guided by the compass along the desired direction; without it, they risk being wrecked on rocks or icebergs. Man has to sail safe across the ocean of Samsara (worldly existence). So he needs a one-pointed, unruffled mind to guide him and guard him. Man has to recognise bad Sankalpas as soon as they arise and render them ineffective by the systematic ...

Happiness and sorrow have to be experienced in the worldly life as they are inevitable like the sunset and sunrise. You think the new year will give better experiences. It is not correct. It is the mind that is responsible for pleasure and pain. If your mind is good, you will find everything good. Without God's Grace, living itself will be impossible for mankind. Even the troubles you may experience are the gifts of the Divine. You are embodiments of the Divine which is nothing but bliss. ...

True human relations can grow only when this truth is recognised. What is the goal of human life? Is it eating, drinking, sleeping, tasting a little joy and grief, and finally dying like any other bird or beast? No, the goal is to realise Brahman (Divinity). Without that, no man can attain Shanti (peace). He must win that peace and bliss by merging in the consciousness of the Absolute by Divine Grace. An aspirant has to first practise the Sadhana (spiritual exercise) related to the Saguna (with form) aspect of God. This will endow him with concentration. ...

Neethi means morality or right conduct. It is the path that leads one to the Divine. Good character, purity of thought, performance of meritorious deeds and selfless sacrifice are all subsumed in the term 'Neethi'. The ancients regarded Neethi as fundamental, without which the society will be maimed. Morality is not something that you must force upon yourself; it is your natural quality. Therefore, first and foremost, cultivate morality. Only then will divinity blossom in you. The entire world ...

Service to God has been described as Bhakti (devotion). The heart of the devotee overflows with love for the Lord through constant remembrance and recitation of His name. Out of this stream of love, devotion emerges. One who is nourished by the nectar of Bhakti will not desire anything. To be unaffected by joy or sorrow, gain or loss, praise or blame, to remain steadfast and unwavering in faith is the hallmark of true devotion. Affection, attachment, desire are natural to man.

The remembrance of God and repetition of His Name is the only means of liberation that is easily accessible to all. People tend to treat the Name of the Lord casually, not realizing its potency. The power of the entire cosmos is contained in it. You must understand the significance of the Name properly and use it in the right way. Bhajan is an effective activity by which Kama (desire) and Krodha (anger) can be kept away. - BABA 18 March 2009

Never rejoice when you are praised or get dejected when you are blamed; be a spiritual lion unaffected by both. Be cheerful and smiling under all circumstances. Depression, doubt and conceit are harmful to spiritual aspirants. But when one's devotion is well established, even if these appear, they can be easily discarded.

The real criterion of moral conduct is harmony between one's thoughts, words and deeds. Morality consists in acting up to the rules of right conduct prescribed by society at a particular time and place for an individual or group. Of all human values, three are most important. The foremost is love of God. Where there is love, there is sacrifice. There arises purity of heart. There should be a fusion of love, sacrifice and purity. They are not mere human qualities. They constitute vital organs ...

Every man should so lead his life that no pain is caused by him to any living being. You must carefully consider the consequences of your speech and action. In whichever way you want others to love and respect you, in the same way you should first love and respect them. Only then will others reciprocate your love and respect. If instead, without loving and respecting others you complain that others are not treating you well, it is a wrong conclusion.

We are unable to comprehend the Atma (spirit) directly. We believe in the existence of the Atma on the strength of the statements made by the great sages who have had the experience of it and who have conveyed it through their teachings. When the Divine is described as One without attributes, eternal, pure, free and self-effulgent, this description will not make the Brahman (God) visible to us. It is only when the state of Brahman is realised by us that its existence is validated to us.

Dharma and Jnana (right conduct and spiritual wisdom) are two eyes given to man to discover his Divinity. Dharma indicates the right path which every individual, group or society should follow. Dharma destroys the one who violates it, and protects the one who protects it. The scriptures have declared, "Where there is Dharma, there is Victory". There is no Dharma greater than Truth. The edifice of Dharma is erected on the foundation of Truth. Nyaya (justice) is an essential attribute ...

Only trees grown in fertile soil can yield good fruits. Those which are grown in saline soil will bear only poor quality of fruits. So also, only in the hearts which are pure and unsullied can such holy feelings and virtues like truth, compassion, forbearance, selflessness grow and shine. Like a farmer who toils to cultivate his field, a Bhakta (devotee) must put in efforts to cultivate the Name of the Lord in his heart in order to reap the harvest - the Lord Himself.

Health is the essential prerequisite for success in all aspects of life, and for realizing the four ideals that guide human life - moral living, prosperity, fulfilling beneficial desires and liberation from grief. Man seeks to live happily and peacefully, but happiness and peace are not won from worldly activities. The body that yearns to be healthy and secure is subject to disease, decay and death. However, the Indweller, the Self, within the body is not born nor does it die. The body is the ...

Bhakti (devotion) does not consist of wearing ochre robes, observing rituals, etc. A pure heart, uninterrupted contemplation of God, feeling that everything is the Lord's creation and therefore One, detachment from sense objects, embracing all in equal love, practising truth in speech - these are the characteristics of Bhakti.

The Bhagavad Gita does not intend that you should pluck a leaf or a flower or a fruit from some plant or tree and place it before God. Nor does it ask you to bring water from a well or a river or a roadside tap. The Leaf that you have to offer is your own body, which like the leaf, sprouts green, fades, and finally falls off from the branch. The Flower is the heart freed from the pests of lust, anger, greed, attachment, pride, hate, etc. The Fruit is the mind, the consequence of its yearnings, ...

Permanent happiness can be secured only through one form of Vidya (knowledge) - the Upanishadic Vidya. That is the science of God-realisation, the teachings of Rishis or seers. That alone can save man and grant him peace. There is nothing higher that. Whatever be the subjects you have specialised in for a profession or living, have your eyes always focussed on this Vidya. - BABA 27 February 2009

Every Bhakta (devotee) hopes to experience the joy of Supreme bliss. But that bliss is not something to be acquired newly, or some new experience to be won by Sadhana (spiritual exercise). It is always with you, in you, only you are not able to taste it now due to the ego which acts as a screen, hiding it from view. One has to rend that veil asunder. Then the ever-existing can be cognised. What comes and goes is the screen of 'I' and 'mine' which covers the bliss.

The Jivi (individual) must realise the evanescence of the body and be all eager to merge in Shiva (God). For this, on need not wait for any auspicious time. This very moment is the right moment. Start today the Sadhana (spiritual exercise) that has to be done tomorrow. Start now the Sadhana that has to be done today. One does not know what is in store next moment. Therefore, there should be no delay in engaging oneself in the Sadhana that has to be done. - BABA 24 February 2009

All experiences of pleasure and pain have their origin in the thoughts of man. A thought is like the seed of a tree, which in due course puts forth branches, leaves, flowers and fruits. All that you see in a tree has come from a small seed. Likewise, although man's thought is subtle, it contains potentially the entire universe. The atom is the microcosm of the Universe. One may have noticed the huge size of the banyan tree; however its seed is very small. Intrinsically, the seed and the ...

Of various forms of Bhakti (devotion), Namasmarana (chanting of God's name) is the best. If every aspirant considers the name of the Lord as the very breath of his or her life, and having complete faith in good deeds and good thoughts, develops the spirit of service and equal love for all, then there can be no better path for Mukti (liberation).

Health is wealth. Without a healthy body, man cannot execute any of his thoughts, however noble they may be. A healthy body leads to a healthy mind. Have your meals on time and relish what you eat. Also, while eating, be filled with positive thoughts - that will bestow upon you good health. In the first instance, give up all bad habits; you will automatically gain good health, which will confer a strong body. You can then lead an ideal and meritorious life full of happiness and bliss.

The six inner enemies: desire, anger, greed, attachment, pride and envy can be uprooted only by the teachings of good men, the love of God, knowledge of the Lord and the company of the holy ones. The heart of the person who does not strive to cultivate his mind with holy thoughts is certain to be paradise of evil and wickedness. This has to be borne in mind by all those aspire for salvation and who hope to rise to greatness.

Men are born with a helpless lamenting cry; they should depart from the world with a smile of joy. That is the purpose of the years of life in between. But those years are wasted now. God, who is the anchor that saves man from the tempests of grief and despair, is neglected and ignored. Man is tossed about from one want to another, one grief to another, until he is blinded by despair and exhausted by foiled pursuits. Most illnesses are due to this despair and this exhaustion.

You may claim that you live righteously, but your basic flaw is that your acts are not done in the spirit of dedication. If so done, they get stamped with the authentic mark of Dharma (righteousness). How can a person aspire to get the attitude of dedicating all his activities to the Lord, without, at the same time, being pure in thought, word and deed?

Janthunam Narajanma Durlabham - there is no greater blessing than human birth. To call oneself a human, first and foremost, one must show humanness in action. Having been born and brought up in society and having earned one's wealth from it, one should show gratitude to it by working for its welfare. The world is facing problems because man does not show his gratitude to society. Society's well-being is your well-being too. Give up selfishness and work for the welfare of the society.

To think that someone is your friend and another your enemy is an error. Such a delusion has to be given up. The Lord who is the embodiment of love is the only true and constant companion, friend, guide and protector. Know this and live in this knowledge. This is the way to lead a life of Dharma (righteousness). The Dharmic way of life is the road to Self-realization. Those who walk along it are dear to the Lord. He dwells with all who are truthful and whose deeds spring from Dharma.

Visit to temples, the company of holy men, the recital of the Divine Name, the adoration of the Divine Form - these are external sources of Light. Dhyana (meditation), Tapas (penance), Manana (contemplation) - these are the sources of inner illumination. Devoid of both, how can men experience the vision of Divine Glory?

Several fuels like petroleum, coal, etc. are extracted from deep within the earth. Wherefrom did they arise in the first place? Over a long period of time, they have accumulated deep inside. Now they are making their appearance outside. In the same way, evil tendencies like desire, anger, hatred, etc., are accumulated in you, hidden in you. Sometime or the other, they are bound to come out. So, take care that they do not even make their entry into you. You should discriminate and ensure that ...

There is no distinction between Bhakti (devotion) and Jnana (wisdom). Just as Saguna (worship of God with attributes) becomes Nirguna (worship of God without attributes), Bhakti becomes Jnana. Therefore each individual deed must be full of the spirit of Seva (service), Prema (love) and Jnana (wisdom). Whatever is done from dawn to dusk must be pure, unsullied and fit to be consecrated in worship of the Lord.

Man has forgotten love and is hankering after worldly objects. Money comes and goes but morality comes and grows. Does your wealth accompany you when you leave this world? No! Only the results of your actions will accompany you. Only the wealth of merit will protect you. Paropakaraya Punyaya, Papaya Parapeedanam (one attains merit by serving others and commits sin by hurting them). Do not accumulate sin. Instead, earn the wealth of merit.

If you earn the wealth of pure love, you become the richest person in the world. He who is contented is the richest man in the world and the one who has many desires is the poorest man in the world. Today, man is filled with desires from top to toe. As long as one has desires, one can never be happy and peaceful. Give up desires and see for yourself how much love and bliss you get. The bliss you experience will be far superior to all the happiness you have experienced before. All the bliss ...

Sadhana (spiritual practice) must be done with complete faith and without any room for doubt. Cultivate love for God. There is nothing greater than that. As your love grows stronger, the Spirit in you will shine brighter. Spiritual growth calls for restraint on desires. In addition, you also have to get rid of attachments and aversions. The three great enemies of man are Kama (desire), Krodha (anger) and Lobha (greed). Desire destroys devotion, anger annihilates wisdom, and greed poisons ...

The attainment of the Absolute does not depend solely on mastery of Brahmavidya (spiritual knowledge). It is beyond the reach of mere study, scholarship or intellectual quest. It is only by Upasana (spiritual practice or worship) that it can be realized. If a scholar with all the weight of learning also gets immersed in Upasana, his life is indeed sanctified. - BABA 27th January 2009
