Q: Why does one fall back into ignorance even after seeing one’s true nature?
SM: After seeing one’s true nature, one should become established in it; otherwise, one falls. Because your true nature exists within you, you can experience it easily and spontaneously. However, becoming established in your true nature after seeing it requires practise. For example, you experience happiness many times during the day, even if only for a few seconds, but those experiences of happiness slip away because you never practise any sadhana to make them last.
In Patanjali Yoga Sutras it is said that after you experience the happiness of your own true nature, you should become anchored in it. Do not forget it. Practise it.
Learn how to make the mid still in the inner Self. If you have seen That, if you make the mind still in That, then happiness will arise within you. If the mind once again starts wandering outside, it will take the form of whatever exists outside, and happiness will vanish. If you do not have form determination and firm practice, then you will fall.
Due to attachment, aversion, anger, and greed, a person falls back into ignorance again and again. You should be steadfast. In the Bhagavad Gits it is said that you should become completely established in That. As long as you don’t attain the state of witness-consciousness, or steady wisdom, you will rise and fall many times. Therefore, the great beings do not give much importance to just seeing their true nature. The real attainment is the state of witness- consciousness, in which the seer becomes still in the seen. When a person attains this state, when he becomes steady in the awareness “I am the Truth,” he becomes complete
